“How you gonna tell me?!”

This was the response of a new addition to our family after a verbal correction.

I smiled and replied, “You’ll see.”

Is the reason for discipline to create obedient children? No. But it is a side benefit.

The purpose of discipline is to give your child reasons to develop self-control that will serve them well for a lifetime. Our kids are capable of self-control, but if they have no reason to improve, then they may choose not to.

Why should they hold their tongue when they feel like cursing?

Why should they do the chore you assigned them when the Xbox is so much more inviting?

And later, as an adult, why should they get to work on time?

Hopefully, the answer to all these questions is that you gave your kids good reasons to make wise choices.
